VIDEO: "I can't bear this bloody thing!” - King Charles appeared to be frustrated and irritated by a leaking pen during a signing ceremony at Northern Ireland's Hillsborough Castle

"I can't bear this bloody thing!”
King Charles appeared to be frustrated by a leaky pen during a signing ceremony at Northern Ireland's Hillsborough Castle.

That was made painfully clear on Tuesday when the 73-year-old monarch was momentarily flummoxed by a leaky pen he was using during a signing ceremony in Belfast, Northern Ireland, according to the Mirror.

The new king was asked to sign a visitors’ book at Hillsborough Castle, but what really made ink was when the pen he was using leaked all over his hand ― in front of news cameras.

A frustrated Charles handed the pen to his wife, Queen Consort Camilla, while griping, “Oh God, I hate this [pen]!”

Camilla’s response: “Oh look, it’s going everywhere.”

Although Charles wiped the ink off his fingers, he seemed to take the pen leaking personally, saying, “I can’t bear this bloody thing ... every stinking time,” as he walked away.

The new monarch has had a busy schedule since his mother’s death at Balmoral in Scotland on Thursday. He returned to London on Friday, then after engagements including his accession ceremony at St James’s Palace and addressing MPs and Lords at Westminster Hall, flew back to Edinburgh on Monday where he walked behind the Queen’s coffin and later stood over it at a vigil with his siblings.

At the accession council on Saturday, an irritated Charles had signalled for aides to move a pen holder and pens that had got in his way as he signed documents.

There was some sympathy for the monarch as social media users reflected on his grief at the loss of his mother and his hectic schedule since her death.

An aide rushed over to retrieve the leaky pen while the King wiped away ink from his right hand with a handkerchief.

“Oh god I hate this (pen)!” Charles said, standing up and handing the pen to his wife, Camilla, Queen Consort.

“Oh look, it’s going everywhere,” Camilla said as her husband wiped his fingers.

“I can’t bear this bloody thing … every stinking time,” Charles said as he walked away.

The moment was captured live on screens, with one viewer remarking: “How hard is it to give the man a pen that’s not leaking and a clutter free table?”
