Gary Neville singled out the 'outstanding' Joe Gomez as his man of the match after Liverpool's 1-0 win at home to Manchester City.

The Reds got the better of a scintillating clash at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah's wonderful second-half run and finish the eventual winner. Prior to the Egyptian's goal, Phil Foden had a goal chalked off after a VAR review deemed Erling Haaland to have fouled Fabinho in the build-up.

Foden's disallowed goal lit the touch paper for a chaotic second-half in which Pep Guardiola riled up the Anfield crowd before Jurgen Klopp saw himself sent off for an aggressive altercation with the assistant referee. But amid all the chaos surrounding him, Gomez put up an incredible performance alongside Virgil van Dijk, effectively silencing Haaland for large parts of the game.

"That’s my man of the match, Joe Gomez," Neville told Sky Sports live on commentary. "It could’ve went to James Milner but it’s going to him. He’s been outstanding at right centre-back, I’m sure City were looking to target before the game but he’s covered behind Milner, he’s made some brilliant interceptions himself."

At the end of the 90 minutes, it was job done. The 25-year-old was named by Sky Sports as Man of the Match, and for good reason, although Mohamed Salah may have something to say about that.

Gomez was composed and constantly aware of the possible danger around him, quick to react and was crucial for Liverpool as they sprung the most welcome of surprises.
