Instagram is having issues this afternoon, with reports of users having their accounts suspended.

According to DownDetector, the problems started at around 13:08 GMT and are affecting users globally.

Other users are reporting losing followers, potentially due to the suspended users being removed from follower counts.

Instagram has tweeted: 'We're aware that some of you are having issues accessing your Instagram account. We're looking into it and apologize for the inconvenience.'

MailOnline has contacted Meta, the company that owns Instagram, for further comment.

So far, more than 4,000 issues have been logged on DownDetector, while more than 1,000 have been reported from users in the UK.

MailOnline tried to access the app, and did not encounter any issues.

However, users who are affected are being given the opportunity to appeal against their suspension, but when they do they see a mysterious black screen.

Many users have taken to Twitter to discuss the problems they are encountering.

One user wrote: 'Ok soooo my account got banned for no reason, couldn’t appeal it and now my account is gone. & I’m not the only one.'

Another added: 'My IG acct got suspended just NOW! So many tweets that their acct got suspended too! HELP US INSTAGRAM!'

And one joked: 'Everyone checking in on Twitter when WhatsApp or Instagram or Facebook is down.'

Hushpuppi is currently on trial in the United States for fraud-related activities.

Recall that Hushpuppi was arrested in June 2020 in Dubai by a joint team of Dubai Police and the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation for alleged internet fraud.

Hushpuppi was later extradited to the US, where he was charged with multiple counts of hacking, impersonation, scamming, banking fraud, and identity theft.

Despite being arrested and tried, Instagram allowed Hushpuppi to share videos and photos on the platform on condition he does not represent dangerous organisations or individuals.

However, the social media platform seems to have reviewed the decision to allow Hushpuppi’s account to remain active
