Officials in the state of Zacatecas confirmed the incident, saying they were eventually able to pull the head away from the dog.
A law enforcement official said the head and other body parts were left in an automatic teller booth in the town of Monte Escobedo, with a message that referred to a drug cartel.
Police say the dog had gotten hold of the corpse’s head before they could act.
A video of the incident had gone viral on social media, featuring the dog trotting down a dark street holding the head by the neck.
The identity of the victim has not been confirmed.
