R&B singer B. Smyth is dead ... at a very young age, and after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
The singer's brother, Denzil, broke the news to fans ... saying Smyth died Thursday from respiratory failure and had been hospitalized for a while, struggling with his lung disease.
B. Smyth -- whose real name was Brandon Smith -- first jumped on the scene after covering hits like "Quickie" by Miguel or "Stay" by Rihanna in the early 2010s on YouTube ... before signing with Motown Records in 2012.
He dropped his first single soon after -- "Leggo" featuring 2 Chainz, and then released his first EP "The Florida Files" in 2013.
"It's very tough for me to make this video because I thought I never would have to make something like this," Denzil said. "So I ask that you guys bear with me if I'm maybe coming off like I'm stuttering or slow with my words, but I'm just making this video [on] behalf of my family, and we ask right now in this particular moment that you guys respect our wishes of privacy and that we accept all the love and condolences on his behalf."
"It's a tough time right now for me, for my family," he continued, "and we're just trying to do our best to cope in this situation."
Born Brandon Smith on March 12, 1994, in Fort Lauderdale, B. Smyth made a name for himself online by sharing covers of songs by popular artists like Rihanna and Miguel. This led him to performing gigs at high-profile talent shows, which earned him a record deal with Motown Records in 2012.
B. Smyth released his debut single, "Leggo," featuring 2 Chainz, in December 2012, followed by his first EP, The Florida Files, in October 2013. He later switched to ByStorm Entertainment and RCA Records, through which he released "Creep," featuring Young Thug, in December 2015.
In the caption of his video, Denzil said his brother "was very excited to see a lot of you create challenges for his latest released single, #Twerkoholic part 2, while he was in the ICU."
He added, "It really brought him a big smile to his face."
Fans all over the world who loved his singles from “Twerkoholic” to “Leggo” are mourning his loss. B. Smyth’s talent and collaborative energy will be sorely missed, but we have to wonder, what was B. Smyth’s exact cause of death? Here's what we know.
According to the Mayo Clinic, pulmonary fibrosis is a debilitating disease that causes damage and scarring on the lung tissue between the lungs’ air sacs (alveoli).
It can be caused by any number of factors, such as exposure to certain toxins like asbestos and animal droppings, radiation treatments, or certain medications. It can also result from viruses like sarcoidosis or pneumonia, although most cases of pulmonary fibrosis have unknown causes.
While doctors might have known what caused B.’s pulmonary fibrosis, he wasn’t open about this aspect of his illness to the public. The average life expectancy for someone with the condition is just three to five years, which means that whenever B. was diagnosed, he knew that it was a death sentence. Basically, it causes so much damage to the lungs that they eventually stop working altogether.
Before passing away, B. spent months in the ICU, which many of his fans were aware of. He even released his newest single, “Twerkoholic Part Two” from his ICU bed. From there, his fans continued sharing videos of dance challenges to the song, which made his time in the hospital at least a bit more enjoyable, according to B.’s brother, Denzil.
Wrote his brother Denzil on Instagram after Smyth’s passing, “On behalf of my brother and my family we want to say thank you to all of you for all of your love & support throughout the years.”
The “Win Win” singer, who was born Brandon Smith, “passed away… from respiratory failure after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis,” Denzil shared.
Denzil also noted that his brother loved his fans and was watching dance challenges for his latest single, “Twerkaholic, Pt. 2,” while he was in the ICU.
“All those new TikToks and Instagram reels made him really, really happy,” Denzil said in the video. “He was able to have a smoother process… All the love and light you were sending on social media he really felt it and sunk into it.”
