Nigerian drug Kingpin Santos Onwukaike and wife, Sandra, who were caught red-handed manufacturing the drug cat, will not spend a day in prison after a magistrate gave then suspended sentences.

The Hawks’ South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB) members intercepted a bakkie laden with oranges along the R555 highway towards Delmas and uncovered concealed narcotics.

The intelligence driven operation was in concert with the K9 Unit. The resultant search uncovered about five kilograms of crystal meth valued at approximately R1.2 million. A 64-year-old male was arrested and charged for dealing as well as possession of narcotics. The suspect is expected to appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 2 November 2022.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated case The Kempton Park Regional Court convicted and sentenced a foreign national couple; Santos Onweni Onwukaike (47) and Sandra Onwukaike (38) after they were found guilty of manufacturing drugs on Monday, 17 October 2022.

On 5 May 2017, the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation opened an enquiry after receiving intelligence about a foreign national couple that was manufacturing drugs at a unit in Avalon Lifestyle Estate, Kempton Park.

Analysis and surveillance was conducted and a search and seizure operation took place on 31 August 2017. The couple was caught red handed manufacturing drugs (CAT).

The couple made their first appearance on 1 September 2017 where they were both denied bail and as a result remanded in custody until July 2018 after multiple court appearances they got granted R15000 bail each.

The couple was sentenced on two counts. One for dealing in drugs and another for manufacturing them. The court sentenced them independently to eight (8) years imprisonment wholly suspended for five years on condition that they are not found guilty of the same offence during the period of suspension. On count, two they received five years imprisonment, wholly suspended for (5) years on condition that they are not found guilty of the same offence.

Santos Onwukaike, 41 and his wife Sandra, 38, were arrested on 31 August 2017 after being caught red-handed manufacturing the drug "cat".

Spokesperson for the Gauteng Hawks Captain Lloyd Ramovha said authorities stared investigating on 5 May 2017 after receiving intelligence about a couple who were manufacturing drugs at a unit in Avalon Lifestyle Estate, Kempton Park.
