England and Harry Kane will not be permitted to wear the ‘One Love’ armband at the Qatar World Cup.
According to the Telegraph, the FA have been told that players will not be allowed to wear the armband, which is designed to show solidarity with minority groups that are criminalised in Qatar.
“There is concern among some European nations who have pledged to wear the armband in Qatar that the team captain could be subject to a booking as soon as the game kicks off, although that has not yet been conveyed to the players,” the Telegraph article states.
Kane is one of 10 captains who have indicated they will wear the OneLove armband – which includes a “heart containing colours representative of all backgrounds”.
Kane grabbed two assists but failed to score in the 6-2 win to move England top of Group B and is now a doubt ahead of the game against USA on Friday, November 25. The Spurs striker was seen limping through the mixed zone after the game with strapping around his right ankle after a challenge from Morteza Pouraliganji before he was substituted in the 75th minute by Gareth Southgate.
Kane has had issues with ankle injuries in the past after being absent on five separate occasions having missed 20 games for Spurs due to problems with his ankles. England will now await to find out the full extent of Kane's latest injury as Gareth Southgate and fans sweat over their World Cup hopes.
The Three Lions face the U.S. Men's National Team on Friday, November 25, just four days after the win against Iran which may come too quickly for the 29-year-old striker.
Callum Wilson replaced Kane against Iran and could be an option for Southgate, along with in-form Manchester United star Marcus Rashford who notched his first World Cup goal from the bench. Southgate has an abundance of attacking talent at his disposal, but Kane's influence in attack and as a captain will be a huge miss if he is set for a prolonged period on the sidelines.
The incident, which took place in the 48th minute in Doha, saw centre back Pouraliganji make a desperate lunge to try to win the ball from the Tottenham striker.
Kane's ankle was trapped in between the defender's leg and the ground and rolled painfully, leaving the star forward wincing in pain.
After receiving several minutes of treatment, he played on but was later replaced by Callum Wilson up front, presumably with an eye on preventing further damage.
The strapping may be a precautionary measure, particularly as Southgate told reporters after the match that Kane is OK.
The Sun report he will be assessed in the next two days but England do not have any serious worries about his fitness.
England play USA on Friday before clashing with Wales on Tuesday in their final Group B match.
On Monday, Bukayo Saka scored a fine double, with Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish also on the scoresheet.
