Ngozi Fulani's charity Sistah Space stops work over racism allegations

Information reaching Kossyderrickent has it that Ngozi Fulani's charity Sistah Space stops work over racism allegations.

Sistah Space was thrown into the spotlight when its founder, Ngozi Fulani, said she felt she was "interrogated" by Lady Susan Hussey at Buckingham Palace last month.

It says it has now "ceased many" of its operations over safety.

Ms Fulani has said she suffered online abuse after speaking out.

Lady Hussey - Prince William's godmother and the late Queen's lady-in-waiting - has since left her honorary role within the Royal Household.

In a statement on its Instagram page, domestic violence charity Sistah Space said: "Thank you for the continued support and messages.

"Unfortunately recent events meant that we were forced to temporarily cease many of our operations to ensure the safety of our service users and our team.

"We are overwhelmed by the amount of support and encouragement and look forward to fully reinstating our services as soon as safely possible."

Ms Fulani said earlier this week that she, her family and team had been put under "immense pressure" and received "horrific abuse" on social media.

The BBC has contacted Sistah Space for further comment.

Lady Hussey was the late Queen's lady-in-waiting and was seen as a key and trusted figure in the Royal Household for decades.

Part of her latest role had involved helping to host events at Buckingham Palace - which is how she met Ms Fulani.

Ms Fulani had been at the Palace representing the London-based charity - which supports women of African and Caribbean heritage who have faced domestic and sexual abuse.

After the event, Ms Fulani described on Twitter how Lady Hussey had moved her hair aside to see her name badge, and had then challenged her to explain where she was from. The conversation, as recounted by Ms Fulani, consisted of Lady Hussey pushing her about her background and nationality.

The BBC understands Lady Hussey remains willing to make a personal apology should it be welcomed.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace previously said "unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments" had been made and all staff were "being reminded of the diversity and inclusivity policies which they are required to uphold at all times".

A spokesperson for Prince William previously said "racism has no place in our society. The comments were unacceptable, and it is right that the individual has stepped aside with immediate effect."In a statement on its Instagram page on Friday night, Sistah Space said: “Thank you for the continued support and messages. Unfortunately recent events meant that we were forced to temporarily cease many of our operations to ensure the safety of our service users and our team.

“We are overwhelmed by the amount of support and encouragement and look forward to fully reinstating our services as soon as safely possible.”

Fulani said Lady Hussey, who is Prince William’s godmother, had also moved Fulani’s hair aside so she could see her name badge.

Hussey, 83, resigned from her position as one of the ladies of the royal household, an honorary position, and offered her “profound apologies” for any hurt caused.

After the incident, Fulani told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: “I was stood next to two other women – black women – and she just made a beeline for me and she took my locks and moved it out of the way so that she could see my name badge.

“That’s a no-no. I wouldn’t put my hands in someone’s hair, and culturally it’s not appropriate.”

Sistah Space said it was “forced to temporarily cease” working after its founder, Ngozi Fulani, spoke out about her treatment by Susan Hussey at a reception at Buckingham Palace. The charity supports women of African and Caribbean heritage who have been affected by domestic and sexual abuse.

Fulani said she had suffered “horrific abuse” on social media after speaking out about the incident, which she said felt “like an interrogation” about where her “people” came from.In a statement on its Instagram page on Friday night, Sistah Space said: “Thank you for the continued support and messages. “That’s a no-no. I wouldn’t put my hands in someone’s hair, and culturally it’s not appropriate.”“Are we saying that because of your age you can’t be racist or you can’t be inappropriate?

“If you invite people to an event, as I said, against domestic abuse, and there are people there from different demographics, I don’t see the relevance of whether I’m British or not British. You’re trying to make me unwelcome in my own space.”

Asked how she felt about the resignation, she said: “I want the focus to remain where it should be, which is on the women and girls who are affected by domestic abuse.”

A spokesperson for the Prince of Wales has previously said the comments were unacceptable and that “racism has no place in our society”. Buckingham Palace has described the remarks as “unacceptable and deeply regrettable”.Hours after drawing protesters’ ire with his first in-person appearance in two months at a Los Angeles City Council meeting, Kevin de León was involved in a fight with an activist Friday night that was at least partially caught on video.

The council member said in a statement that he was assaulted. Activists said De León was the aggressor.De León was at Lincoln Park for a toy giveaway and holiday tree lighting when the incident occurred, his office told The Times.

A video posted on Twitter on Saturday by RootsAction shows activists walking alongside De León inside the event calling on him to resign while Jason Reedy, an organizer with the People’s City Council, stands in front of the councilman holding his phone in his face. When De León reaches a door, someone pushes Reedy out of the way.

The video shows De León going through the door into a back room and trying to close it. But Reedy follows him and the councilman appears to push him back. Reedy, holding his arms up, stands nose-to-nose with De León as others mob the pair. There’s a brief struggle, then De León grabs Reedy, throws him into a table and attempts to push him out of the room.In a statement, De León said that he, a staff member and a volunteer were “violently and physically assaulted by self-proclaimed activists at a community holiday event to the dismay of a multitude of families and children who were there to celebrate a Christmas tree lighting and to receive toys and food.”

Video of the incident captured by a witness shows de León attacking a man in the hallway of the event in Lincoln Heights.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, a large fight broke out at around 6:30 p.m. local time at the 3500 block of Valley Boulevard. Police said the eight people involved in the fight had left the scene before officers arrived.Jason Reedy was assaulted by de León and has reported the incident to LAPD, Reedy's attorney Shakeer Rahman said.

"Kevin de Leon is a disgrace," Rahman told Fox News Digital. "Video footage clearly shows him and his supporters initiating this assault while Mr. Reedy stands with his hands up. Not only has Kevin de Leon lost all political legitimacy, his claims that he was the one attacked here simply underscores how he’s lost touch with reality."

"This evening a staff member, volunteer, and I were violently and physically assaulted by self-proclaimed activists at a community holiday event to the dismay of a multitude of families and children who were there to celebrate a Christmas tree lighting and to receive toys and food," he wrote.

"The escalating rhetoric is hitting a fever pitch, transcending from verbal threats into actual acts of violence and must end before more serious harm or loss of life occurs," the councilmember continued. "Violence is not free speech and has no place in politics or democracy."

No suspects were taken into custody in connection with Friday's attack. The incident remains under investigation.

The embattled de León has been a subject of controversy after leaked audio showed himself, former council President Nury Martinez, outgoing Councilman Gil Cedillo and a labor union leader engaging in a closed-door city council meeting that included racist language. Martinez resigned amid the outrage and Cedillo lost his re-election bid in June.
