VIDEO: Rohit Sharma advising Zimbabwe under-19 team regarding mindset at MCA

India captain Rohit Sharma is likely to be available for the second and final Test against Bangladesh, starting from December 22 in Mirpur. As per sources close to ANI, Rohit went for rehabilitation and will recover in time before the second Test match and will fly to Bangladesh for the match. Rohit missed the third and final ODI, as well as the first Test, against Bangladesh, due to a thumb injury sustained in the second ODI.

After a special consultation in Mumbai, it was found out by the medical team that this persistent injury was keeping him out of action, and even forced him out of the first Test against Bangladesh, which began on 14 December.

KL Rahul led the Indian Test team in his absence while uncapped batter Abhimanyu Easwaran replaced him in the squad. 27-year-old Easwaran has played 78 first-class matches so far, scoring 5576 runs at 45.33.

Not only Rohit Sharma but there were many other cricketers who failed to make it to the Indian squad like Jasprit Bumrah (back), Mohammad Shami (shoulder) and Ravindra Jadeja (knee). These star players have failed to recover in time and have been ruled out of both Tests.

Navdeep Saini and Saurabh Kumar have been named as replacements for these players. India have also drafted fast bowler Jaydev Unadkat into the 17-man squad.

Rohit is currently at the National Cricket Academy, Bengaluru. He has passed the required fitness tests. However, he did not bat for long in nets of NCA. Instead, he had two short physio sessions. He will rejoin the squad in Chattogram by Sunday.

“Rohit is fine now. He has healed in time. The stitches have come out. We did not want to rush things. But he is certainly better and the physios have given him clearance for the 2nd Test. He will travel back to Bangladesh in a day or two,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

It was during Bangladesh’s innings when Rohit tried to take a catch of Anamul Haque in the 2nd slip. But the ball hit the surface and hit Rohit Sharma on the thumb. He immediately started bleeding from the thumb. The physios took him off field and rushed him to the hospital for scans.

Rohit Sharma hasn’t played a Test match since the home series against Sri Lanka earlier this year. He missed the 5th test against England in July due to COVID-19, with Jasprit Bumrah leading the side. Here, vice-captain KL Rahul will take over in both Tests and ODIs.

Ruled out from Bangladesh Test matches due to the thumb injury, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma gave a pep talk to the Zimbabwe U-19 squad recently. Rohit looked proactive during his speech to young Zimbabwe players as he told them to work hard and focus on their careers.

In a video uploaded on Twitter, Rohit emphasized the fact that young players need to have a good mindset especially at the starting phase of cricketing career. The Indian skipper also told the young Zimbabwean players to have a positive mindset at the current age as it will set a tone for their future.
