Floral tributes have been left to a 'one of a kind' Haverhill teenager who died after a stabbing.

Harley Barfield, 16, died yesterday morning after the stabbing on Monday in a car park next to Strasbourg Square.

A 16-year-old boy is due to appear in court today charged with murder.

The stabbing followed a dispute between two teenage boys at just after 3pm.

Harley was initially taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for treatment, before being transferred to the Royal Papworth Hospital.

A 16-year-old boy, from the Haverhill area, was arrested shortly after the incident and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with murder and remanded in custody to appear before Suffolk Magistrates’ Court today.

In a statement, Unity Schools Partnership, where Harley was a former pupil, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Harley and, on behalf of all staff and students across all our schools, we offer our deepest condolences.

“All local schools will continue to support their students through this very difficult time. The 16-year-old - who has been named by police as Harley Barfield - was assaulted just after 3pm on Monday at Strasbourg Square in Haverhill, Suffolk.

He was initially taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge and later transferred to specialist heart and lung hospital Royal Papworth.

A police spokesman said the investigation had now become a murder inquiry, adding: "Sadly, despite the best efforts of medical staff and brave resistance from Harley, he passed away this morning."

A 16-year-old boy who was arrested shortly after the attack on suspicion of attempted murder has since been charged with murder.

Suffolk Police said the teenager's family and some "key witnesses" to the assault were being supported by specially trained officers.

Police said the suspect was remanded in custody to appear before Ipswich Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

Harley was initially taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, before being transferred to the city's Royal Papworth Hospital.

Police said he died this morning.

The force said: "Detectives understand that both parties were known to each other and as such, this is being treated as an isolated incident with no wider threat to the public."

It has appealed for anyone with information or video footage to contact officers.
