Police boss Major General T Mthombeni was robbed off his iPhone iPad, wrist watch and service pistol, by armed suspects driving a Silver Hyundai i20 reg JC71NBGP in Midrand Johannesburg.

Major General Mthombeni is a deputy provincial commissioner in Gauteng responsible for policing.

The criminals stole two cellphones - a state-owned iPhone phone valued at R17 000 and his privately-owned iPhone phone valued at R25 000 - a Patek Phillip replica wrist watch valued at R3 000 and R2 100 in cash. The criminals also stole his black Gucci bag and black Panorama leather belt valued R2 500.

They also stole his passport, ID card, Mercedes-Benz cabriolet key, Glock firearm and an extra 30-round.

The suspects, who are alleged to have been following the two, fled the scene in a silver-grey i20 Hyundai with a GP number plate.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that a case of armed robbery was being investigated by the police and said the police were requesting assistance in locating the suspects.

According to the statement, which was leaked to the City Press, the friend who was with him was also robbed at gunpoint.

"At the time the friend, by the name of Johannes Malaka, was also sitting inside the dry cleaners who was also pointed at by the other suspect with a firearm," the statement read.

On 2023 /01/26 during the morning at about 11h56 the complainant was at the Link Shopping Centre, Unit 12 Northern Dry Cleaners in Midrand. He was fetching his clothes as he was preparing to attend the National Police Day. The male person by the name of Vengai Pambeni was busy helping him over the counter. All of a sudden he heard the cocking of a firearm at his back. He was then instructed to give all his belongings. While he looked back he saw two (2) x a/males armed with pistols pointing him.

Several police detectives, who did not want to be named because they are not allowed to speak to the media, said Mthombeni was visiting a tailor for alterations at Northern Dry Cleaners at the Link Shopping Centre when two armed men pounced.

The robbers, disguised in balaclavas and armed with firearms, demanded cellphones from people who were in the shop. Mthombeni cooperated and handed over his two expensive iPhones.
“After taking the cellphones, the suspects demanded and took Mthombeni’s Gucci bag. The bag contained a Panorama wristwatch, Mercedes Benz car keys, a Clock 25 40 calibre pistol and R2 100 cash. We believe the estimated value of all the items is about R49 100,” said the cop.

Another police officer said the other suspect grabbed Mthombeni and forcefully removed his Patek Philippe wristwatch. The suspects escaped in a silver-grey Hyundai vehicle and are still at large
