The volleyball coach who slapped his two players had apologised to them and their parents, says Melaka Youth and Sports exco

The volleyball coach who slapped his two players had apologised to them and their parents, says Melaka Youth and Sports exco.

He says the Dec 14 incident occurred when the coach got emotional as his players did not perform as expected during a match between Melaka and Johor.

“It was the first time Melaka had advanced to the semifinals, however, they narrowly lost to Johor 2-3.

“After the match, the coach explained the situation to the technical management, who also reprimanded him for his actions,” Shanmugam adds.

The Melaka Sports Council would make a decision on Wednesday (Jan 4) on the coach’s fate.

Shanmugam notes that the coach’s record also needs to be taken into account as no complaints have been lodged against him before.

3. “After the incident, he met with the two players and apologised. The incident was resolved on the spot on the same day,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

Shanmugam adds the coach had also met the players’ parents and apologised for the incident.

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports minister Hannah Yeoh says KBS will conduct an independent investigation to determine if such harsh training methods are a norm.

“We must learn from this, improve and ensure no repeat,” she tweeted, adding that slapping both girls and boys is wrong.

“In fact, slapping anyone is wrong.

“Malaysians must stop normalising physical abuse as a means of behavioural compliance – wrong on kids, athletes, spouse or maid!” Yeoh tweeted.
