This 9-year-old boy, David Balogun, graduates high school in 3 years: “I want to be an astrophysicist”

This 9-year-old boy graduates high school in 3 years: “I want to be an astrophysicist”.

Most 9-year-old kids are sitting around waiting for lunchtime or recess, but this child prodigy just graduated from high school.

David Balogun received a diploma from Reach Cyber Charter School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, according to NBC affiliate WGAL.

The wunderkind took online classes from his home, and especially enjoyed his studies in science and computer programming.

“I want to be an astrophysicist, and I want to study black holes and supernovas,” David shared.

The star student started his high school classes right before the pandemic shut schools down, and he continued to take his courses virtually until he had the required credits to graduate, according to Insider.

Balogun has already completed a semester at Bucks Community College. Now his family is looking at colleges and universities around the country to see which one is the right fit.

“I’m going to send my nine-year-old to Harvard while I’m living in PA? No,” his father, Henry Balogun said.

According to oldest.org, Balogun one of the youngest children known to ever graduate high school, after Michael Kearney, who graduated high school in 1990 at just 6 years old.

I had to get outside of the box. Playing pillow fights when you’re not supposed to, throwing the balls in the house,” his mother, Ronya, said. “He’s a 9-year-old with the brain that has the capacity to understand and comprehend a lot of concepts beyond his years and sometimes beyond my understanding.”

Ronya said that they tested their son for giftedness in first grade, when he had already gone beyond the second-grade level for both math and English.

While most 9-year-old students are eagerly anticipating graduating from elementary school, this Pennsylvania boy just got his high school diploma.

David Balogun, 9, recently received a diploma from Reach Cyber Charter School, which is based in Harrisburg, after taking online classes, according to NBC affiliate WGAL.

This achievement makes David one of the youngest people to graduate from high school, reported The Guardian.

David started high school right before COVID-19 closed school doors in early 2020, and continued his studies virtually ever since, according to Insider. Per the outlet, he ended up graduating in three years with a 4.0 GPA.

"David was an inspirational kid, definitely one who changes the way you think about teaching," science teacher Cody Derr told WGAL.

Alongside hobbies that include playing the piano and martial arts, the child prodigy is passionate about science and computer programming, and already has career aspirations to become an astrophysicist, he told the local station.

"I want to be an astrophysicist, and I want to study black holes and supernovas," he said.

The boy's parents, who have advanced degrees, said their son is unusually gifted.

"He's a 9-year-old with a brain that just has the capacity to understand and comprehend a lot of concepts that's beyond his years and sometimes beyond my understanding," said his mother, Ronya.
