52% of Malaysians believe we have “gone so far in promoting women’s equality that we are discriminating against men”, according to an Ipsos survey

52% of Malaysians believe we have “gone so far in promoting women’s equality that we are discriminating against men”, according to an Ipsos survey.

65% also believe that “men are expected to do too much to support equality”. The survey also found that around one-third of Malaysians think a man who stays at home to look after his children is “less of a man”.

However, 68% of Malaysians say they believe equality between men and women can be achieved in their lifetime.

Meanwhile, the survey also showed that one in five Malaysians have seen acts of sexual harassment against women around them.

29% also report having heard a friend or family member making sexist comments. 58% of Malaysians also say they are scared to speak out and advocate for the equal rights of women, due to possible consequences.

Ipsos says the survey involved 22,508 adults, aged 18-74, across 32 countries.

The interviews were conducted from Dec 22, 2022 to Jan 6, 2023.
