The memorial service of the late Richards Bay player, Siphamandla Mtolo, is currently underway at the Nkobongo community hall, Shakaskraal, following his death

The memorial service of the late Richards Bay player Siphamandla Mtolo is currently underway at the Nkobongo community hall, Shakaskraal.

Mtolo collapsed and died while training with the club earlier this week.

The 29-year-old midfielder collapsed during training before his shock passing. We, at Kossyderrickent, would like to express our condolences to Mtolo's family, friends, everyone at Bay and the whole football fraternity.

Mtolo missed the majority of the season due to a long-term injury, having captained them when they claimed the Motsepe Foundation Championship last campaign to be promoted in the big league in the DStv Premiership.

He recovered from the injury, entering the field in the second half when Bay beat Swallows 1-0 on 31 December. He was the starter when Bay hosted Mamelodi Sundowns in th following game, though his knee was heavily strapped.

He passed away having featured in eight league matches this season for Bay. “It is with deep sadness to announce that Richards Bay Football Club has untimely lost one of its midfielders, Siphamandla ‘Spepe’ Mtolo, [who] collapsed this morning during training,” said the club.

“The club is not in a position to provide further information at this stage and asks that his family’s privacy is respected during this difficult time of bereavement.

“His presence both on and off the pitch will be sorely missed. Thoughts and prayers from everyone at Richards Bay Football Club are with his family, friends and loved ones.”

The club said a further statement would be issued in due course.
