Remembering Pittsburgh music producer & artist Mike Tomlin aka “Tomlinese” who police say was shot to death in Wilkinsburg Sat. Friends gathered at Point State Park to honor the 33y/o artist who wrote, sang & created jingles. He also used to work at WAMO 100.7.
People in Pittsburgh's rap community are mourning the loss of a well-respected rapper and producer, Mike "Tomlinese" Tomlin, who was shot and killed overnight on Sunday.
"The city won't sound the same," said Portia Foxx. "And that's what's kinda breaking my heart."
Allegheny County police reported a man was killed in a shooting in Wilkinsburg on Franklin Avenue near Midland late Saturday night. It happened just after Pittsburgh police discovered the body of one of his close friends.
Mike Tomlin, who was not the coach of the Steelers, was a successful musician in Pittsburgh who dabbled in other countries. Tomlin’s life was cut short, according to Jamal Campbell, following the shooting.
He was really like the triple threat," Foxx said. "He could sing, he could rap, he could produce. He was all-in when it came to his craft."
Foxx added that Tomlin was also a talented engineer at the radio station, where he exuded energy.
"He made every day coming in there fun," Foxx said. "He was just a free spirit. He did what he wanted to do."
Allegheny County police and the medical examiner's office have not confirmed the identity of the victim who died near Franklin Avenue and Midland Street in Wilkinsburg, but friends confirmed the victim was Tomlin.
"They took an energy that will never be seen again in this city," said Jamal Campbell, a friend of Tomlin since 2011. "He was truly a gift."
Brown said she recalls Tomlin rising early and working late at WAMO 100.7 to hone his craft and develop new talent throughout the city.
“He was very dedicated to his work, and his work ethic was impeccable,” she said.
Friends told Channel 11 that Tomlin had returned to Pittsburgh only a year or so ago after living in Los Angeles for some time and said it’s devastating for this to have happened in his hometown.
“When he left, I thought big things were going to happen for him, I said, ‘When you blow up, don’t forget me,’” Campbell said.
The medical examiner’s office has yet to release their report on the exact cause of death, but county police are asking any with information to contact them.
