VIDEO: Ed Sheeran brought out Eminem at his Detroit concert, where they performed 'Lose Yourself' and 'Stan'

Growing up in England, Ed Sheeran was intrigued by Detroit, galvanized in particular by one of the city’s musical sons: Eminem.

That’s how Sheeran set the stage for fans Saturday night at Ford Field as he and his band embarked on a rendition of Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.” They had just rehearsed the song that day, so “let’s see how it goes,” he said, playing down expectations.

“Lose Yourself”
“His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy / There’s vomit on his sweater already, mom’s spaghetti / He’s nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready / To drop bombs, but he keeps on forgetting / What he wrote down, the whole crowd goes so loud / He opens his mouth, but the words won’t come out / He’s choking, how? Everybody’s joking now / The clock’s run out, time’s up, over, blaow,” Sheeran sang before Eminem emerged onto stage to finish out the verse. Just before 10 PM when Eminem arrived to the stage, the stadium erupted.

A capacity crowd delighted by the unexpected hometown homage soon erupted with a roar of hysteria. A hooded figure was emerging from beneath the stage, and the reality quickly became clear: Here was Eminem, making his first Detroit concert appearance in years, joining the festivities to perform his signature hit.

In the midst of Sheeran’s headlining concert on Saturday evening (July 15) at the home of the Detroit Lions, he told the crowd that he was going to perform a cover of an Eminem song, but much to the audience’s surprise the legendary 50-year-old rapper was there and took the stage with Sheeran.

“I wondered if I could play you a cover of an Eminem song tonight,” Sheeran said, prompting a roaring applause from the capacity crowd. “I think you’ll know it. We rehearsed it today. We’ll see how it goes.” He then went on to strum his guitar in the key of Eminem’s massive hit, “Lose Yourself,” and exploded into a cover of the tune.
