Caroline Woodley is proud to represent the ward where she lives with her son, and to work as part of a Cazenove Labour team dedicated to community engagement and inclusion.

Together with her ward colleagues, she has endeavoured throughout the pandemic to keep in touch with residents, raise casework and ask the council to address local concerns. Committed to creating a greener ward, with street trees and rain gardens, she is excited that in her role as Cabinet Member for Families, Early Years, Parks and Play she has the opportunity to lead on delivering a green infrastructure strategy. This ties in to a wealth of work around climate justice, tackling poverty and creating a fairer, more inclusive economy.

Since election in 2018, Caroline has built a reputation for being hard working, welcoming and open to both collaboration and to challenge. She would love to continue working as part of the Cazenove team. Caroline was born in 1932. She is the daughter of Thomas Woodley and Caroline Smith.

Caroline Woodley NET WORTH: Caroline Woodley is worth $250K

CAREER: Previously the cabinet member for families, parks and leisure, Ms Woodley's pre-election promises included prioritising social housing and making Hackney more inclusive.

Hackney Council introduced directly elected mayors with executive power in 2002 and Ms Woodley is the first woman to hold the role.

Turnout was 21% and Ms Woodley received 18,474 of the 37,289 votes cast.

Former mayor Philip Glanville stood down in September after being suspended by the Labour Party when a photo emerged showing him at a social event with an ex-councillor convicted of possessing indecent images of children.

The statutory deputy mayor, Anntoinette Bramble, acted in the mayor's place between Mr Glanville's resignation and Ms Woodley's election.

Ms Woodley is the borough’s third directly elected mayor, and first female mayor. She has been a Labour ward councillor in Cazenove since 2018, and has spent two years as a Cabinet Member in Hackney Council.

On winning the by-election Ms Woodley said: “I want to thank the people of Hackney for placing their faith in me and electing a Labour mayor of Hackney.

“Serving this special place of solidarity and culture is the greatest honour of my life. I will work for you day and night. That's all of you.

“I will build on that legacy, with 1000 new council homes, a green new deal to tackle the climate emergency. I want to support local jobs, better customer services, and safer, healthier streets for all.”..

She added: “I entered politics five years ago. Back then, I could never have imagined I would go on to become the first woman to serve as the directly elected mayor of Hackney. I will lead our borough in that spirit of progress: proudly anti-racist, inclusive, welcoming, kind and open. A place where you can be who you are. A place for us all.”

The former mayor Mr Glanville, who was first elected as mayor in 2016, resigned in September after a photo emerged showing him at a Eurovision Party with former councillor Tom Dewey, who had been arrested over child abuse images.
