Information reaching Kossyderrickent has it that Ashanti Norman got beat up by her dad, Jonathan Norman, who accused her of stealing $2,500.

This is the story of Ashanti Norman.
And I think the violence she survived, the institutional failures around her, and the way Black girls are left unprotected should be your next rabbit hole.

Let’s talk about a case that is not on the news, not in a documentary, and not treated with urgency. A case that should terrify anyone who cares about the safety of Black children.

Ashanti Norman shared her story publicly on FB after police ignored her. She described going to her father’s house to get clothes, only for him to accuse her of stealing twenty five hundred dollars. She told him she did not have his money. He kept calling, demanding answers, and insisting she took it. His girlfriend joined in and questioned her too.

✴️ He went to her grandfather’s house, searched her belongings, and when he found nothing, he assaulted her. She said he hit her in the face, pulled her hair, and forced her into his car while his girlfriend continued to accuse her of theft. They checked security footage and found the money in the Walmart bag Ashanti had been telling them about. Even with proof, he chose violence.

✴️ At his house, the abuse escalated. According to Ashanti, he beat her, shoved a sock in her mouth, tied a shoelace around her head to keep the sock in place, tied her hands behind her back, and whipped her with a dryer cord. His girlfriend witnessed it and did nothing to protect her.

✴️ He then isolated her in a shed outside, still tied up, still gagged, still begging him to believe she did not steal the money. He locked her in, left her on the floor, and continued interrogating her. When she asked to look around the house to prove her innocence, he kept beating her. He cut her shirt off and hit her again. He then held a gun to her forehead and threatened her while walking her back to her grandfather’s home.

✴️ Ashanti reached her grandfather’s house still tied up, her clothes cut off, her face injured. Her family saw her condition and tried to make sense of what had happened. Her father followed her inside and continued to accuse her of theft. When her grandfather woke up and confronted him, her father eventually said she did not need to give him money anymore and told her to never contact him again. He then went outside and destroyed her phone.

✴️ The police arrived. According to Ashanti, they questioned her, but instead of treating her as a victim of kidnapping, assault, false imprisonment, and torture, they focused on the theft accusation her father texted her mother about. They allowed him to frame the narrative even while throwing away her belongings and blaming her for the violence he inflicted.

Why I think this is important:

Because the story of Ashanti Norman is not only about one man’s brutality. It is about how easy it is for Black girls to be victimized, disbelieved, and abandoned by every system that is supposed to protect.

It is about how quickly adults excuse violence when the abuser is a parent and the victim is their child.

It is about how controlling parents weaponize authority, how community members stay silent, and how the police often choose to ignore cases where the victim is a Black child instead of a white one.

This story highlights something uncomfortable. Black girls are expected to be strong, to endure, to survive. And when they are brutalized, people minimize it. They call it discipline. They call it a family matter. They call it anything except the truth.

Ashanti’s injuries make the truth undeniable. Her fear makes it undeniable. Her words make it undeniable. What happened to her is a crime. What happened to her is abuse. And what happened to her is exactly what happens when a society does not consider Black girls worthy of protection.
