The death of Gerson de Melo Machado, 19 , known as “Vaqueirinho”, after invading a lioness’s cage in João Pessoa (PB), this Sunday (November 30), exposed a history marked by extreme vulnerability, untreated mental disorders and successive police records.

According to police officer Josenice de Andrade Francisco, in an interview with Metrópoles , the young man had accumulated 16 prior offenses, mainly for property damage and petty theft.

She states that the young man presented visible mental disorders. During his last visit to the police station last week, there was a request for psychiatric hospitalization. “I believe the request was never considered,” she says.

Accounts from police officers who dealt directly with Gerson show that he repeatedly expressed his dream of going to Africa and caring for lions. He said he would make the journey “on foot,” and the officers tried to explain that the continent was very far away.
