On November 14, 2025, 11‑year-old Stephora Anne-Mircie Joseph, a top student, died during a school-organized pool trip in Gurabo, near Santiago, Dominican Republic.
Her mother was first told Stephora was vomiting at the hospital, but after hours of waiting, she was directed to pick up her daughter’s body elsewhere, with no explanation, access to security footage, or preliminary report.
Family lawyers say the outing violated a 2009 education authority ban on trips to pools or water sites, and the villa lacked lifeguards, safety equipment, and proper supervision.
Authorities have launched an official investigation, but parents, civil-society groups, and human-rights advocates continue to demand transparency, accountability, and justice for Stephora.
