The suspect, identified as Jayson Gabayan Viray, and a woman believed to be his pregnant wife, allegedly fled without paying after refueling their vehicle and filling eight gasoline containers. Gasoline station attendant Jenson Gotle said the two had pleaded to be allowed to refuel, promising to return with payment. They never came back.
Gotle later took to social media to appeal to the suspects, saying he is a minimum-wage worker and had no way to cover the amount they owed.
On April 22, Police Major Thirz Starsky Timbancaya of Narra Police identified Viray in a Facebook Live broadcast and said he has been involved in other fraud-related incidents in southern Palawan, including a motorcycle pawn scam using falsified documents.
According to Timbancaya, Viray and his companion had pawned at least four motorcycles to a businessman in Narra using fake land titles and identification cards. Authorities have since confiscated the motorcycles and the documents.
In earlier incidents, Viray also allegedly victimized gas stations in Aborlan. In one case, he left behind a fake driver’s license after claiming he forgot his wallet. The gasoline bill reportedly reached P3,700. In another, he issued a check and promised to return after encashing it, but never did. The unpaid amount reached P4,700.
Two more gas stations in Inagawan and Barangay Luzviminda also reported losing approximately P13,000 and P3,000, respectively, to similar schemes. In each case, Viray allegedly told employees that he forgot his money and would come back to settle the bill.
Authorities also discovered that the car used in these incidents was a rented vehicle. A check with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) revealed that the driver’s license left at one of the gas stations was fake.
Police are now coordinating with victims and local gasoline station owners to locate and file charges against the suspect. There are also reports that Viray is involved in a separate case in Burirao, Narra, where he allegedly transported cut timber without the owner’s consent.
Authorities urged gasoline stations across Palawan to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity. Police also advised employers not to penalize pump attendants for falling victim to such scams, as several employees were reportedly charged personally for the unpaid fuel.
