UPDATE: Uganda Police Force say they are holding two UPDF soldiers after a student of Gulu Central High School was shot dead during a protest last night. The soldiers are said to have been drunk at the time they were deployed to contain the students.

The students were protesting a decision by the school admin to block them from watching Man United Vs Man City football match. Several properties were destroyed and as a result, the school has been closed for 2 weeks and over 1,000 students sent home.

The boy, 19, died when a bullet hit him after he climbed a tree to get out of the way, the headmaster told the BBC.

Some 1,000 pupils were sent home as the boarding school was shut for two weeks.

Following the protest, the administration summoned the students and gave them 15 minutes to leave the school premises under police escort. The school will reopen after two weeks.
