The team might have struggled in some events, but they dominated a few, making them one of
the best-performing teams representing Africa. They not only made Kenyans proud but all of Africa. They were a joy to watch, and we can’t say that the team didn’t do its best to do more in
the face of many adversities.
We saw some incredible records from the team, and we would like to share some of the
highlights from the competition as we look at the team’s overview. We want to see how they
fared and what they brought back from their trip to Birmingham for the 2022 Commonwealth
Games.
Kenya’s Record at the Event
Kenya had an impressive run at the event, where the team got 21 medals, including six golds,
five silver, and ten bronze. It is one of the most for any African country at the Birmingham
Commonwealth Games. The team was hardworking as they tried to compete with some of the
best nations.
The event occurred in one of the largest cities in the United Kingdom, with many teams from
across the world participating and hoping to take home the gold. To end the competition for
Kenya, Julius Yego won the bronze medal as we capped off the athletics division of the
competition at the Alexandar Stadium on Sunday.
With their 21 medals, Kenya ended the tournament as third in Africa and 13th overall, which is
not a bad fit for the country. This would help build their confidence going to the next world
tournament and even the Olympics. We believe Kenya’s Commonwealth Games record was
better than expected.
Aside from winning many medals, some Kenyan athletes made strides in the competition and
ensured they were part of the top records. Even though the 4x100m mixed relay swimming
team didn’t make it to the podium, they made history. Emily Muteti and Imara Bella Thorpe partnering with Maina Monyo and Ridhwan Abubakar, set a national record of 3:43.33 in the
final.
Top Athletes and Medalists
Kenya was the best in athletics for African teams, where they finished third behind Australia,
with 24 medals in that category. The country had some incredible athletes that took the competition by storm. We saw some incredible actions from the team as they continued to do
better as the games progressed. The six gold medalists for the team include Ferdinand Omanyala, Mary Moraa, Wycliffe Kinyamal, Abraham Kibiwott, Jackline Chepkoech, and Beatrice Chebet. These athletes helped
put the country on the world stage with the national anthem played for the world to hear.
We have Timothy Cheruiyot, Daniel Simiu, Irene Cheptai, Jacob Krop, and Margaret Wangari on
the silver medal table. Finally, we have Micheal Githae, Nicholas Kimeli, Amos Serem, Kibiwott Kandie, Sheila Chepkirui, Selah Jeplating, Emily Ngii, Julius Yego, Helen Wawira, Wisemen
Were, William Rayan, Mike Mokamba, and Boniface Mweresa.
Kenya Compared to the Best Nations
The best team in the competition was Australia, as the team gathered 177 medals, including 66
gold, 57 silver, and 54 bronze. They have been a top team in many Commonwealth games.
Therefore, comparing them might be far-fetched. Coming to the African scene, Kenya was the
third-best team.
They followed South Africa, which had 27 medals, including seven gold, nine silver, and 11
bronze, and Nigeria, a team with 12 gold, nine silver, and 14 bronze. The Nigeria team was the
leading team when it came to Africa. However, Kenya bossed the Athletics department as the
team was third in the category.
What We Think About Kenya’s Performance
Looking at Kenya’s performance at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games and
comparing it to other nations, we can say that they didn’t do too badly. The team was not too
terrible, and they met expectations to some extent. They could’ve done better, but other teams also came prepared. Therefore, we can’t fault them
for their results in the competition: six gold, five silver, and ten bronze are not a bad return.
