The since-deleted tweet was accompanied by a photo of the 63-year-old with his right arm out while a needle is visibly seen puncturing his skin.
The snap originated from a 2012 documentary titled “Endgame: AIDS in Black America,” where Johnson was asked to draw blood by his physician. But people on Twitter were outraged, seemingly under the assumption that the former NBA star had actually donated his blood in an effort to tackle coronavirus. “Earlier today, NBA legend Magic Johnson donated his blood to the Red Cross to help underprivileged communities fight COVID-19,” the user wrote.
The tweet had gained enough attraction for Johnson to issue a response as he took to his own Twitter account on Tuesday to dispel the absurd claim, writing, “I’m aware of the false story circling the internet, and to be clear, I have never donated blood.”
