It is not known on what grounds Nguyen Vo Quynh Trang has appealed to the Family & Juvenile Court.
On November 25 the HCMC People’s Court gave Trang, 27, the death sentence for "murder," while Nguyen Kim Trung Thai, 36, received three years for "torture" of the child and five years for "concealing a crime."
Trang and Thai had lived together with his eight-year-old daughter for over a year since he divorced his former wife in 2020.Trang was found to have frequently beaten the 8-year-old girl and made her do household chores, using wooden implements when rods broke due to the frequent abuse. Thai had also prevented the girl's biological mother from visiting her.
On December 22, Trang beat the girl so severely that she lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital, where she was declared dead upon arrival.
An autopsy revealed that the girl had suffered a hematoma under the skin of her forehead, mild cerebral edema, and broken ribs.
After the girl's death, Thai deleted all the data from the cameras at his home, but the police were able to recover footage showing Trang beating the girl for hours on the arms and legs with sticks and binding her to a chair as punishment.
