P-22 was "compassionately euthanized" this morning, according to the California Dept. of Fish & Wildlife's director, due to the serious injuries the mountain lion suffered earlier this week.

Each doctor is crying and it's brutal.

“P-22 had a number of severe injuries and chronic health problems, his prognosis was deemed poor, based on all these factors and a unanimous recommendation by the medical team at the San Diego Zoo’s safari park" euthanization was approved.

Other injuries: extensive weight loss, at minimum 20% of body mass. P-22 "had a stage 2 kidney failure, he had advanced renal disease. He also had advanced liver disease and now increasingly his last 24 hours he may have had heart disease.”

Beth Pratt, a regional executive director in California for the National Wildlife Federation who has called herself P-22’s agent, will be gathering a "support group" at Griffith Park today.

P-22 "went to sleep" at 9 a.m. The decision to euthanize wasn't finalized until this morning but had begun trending that way Thursday night, officials said. A memorial service will take place after Christmas.
