Joseph Kubende, famous Bungoma political mobiliser, dies after falling from 4th floor of building on Lumumba Drive, Roysambu; police probing suicide allegation

Bungoma artist Joseph Kubende Died on Thursday, March 23 after falling from a building in Roysambu, Nairobi.

The family of the late prominent Bungoma political mobiliser Joseph Kubende now wants the government to conduct speedy investigations into his death before he is laid to rest.

The 42-year-old is alleged to have jumped from the fourth floor balcony of GM apartments in Roysambu estate, before being pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

The family, led by David Shakama, said Kubende had secured a job in the United States of America just recently and had only come for an assignment in Rwanda before flying back.

“Serikali ifanye investigation ya kutosha, kwa sababu huwezi tuambia Joseph ametoka U.S akaenda kukaa na wenzake akawachwa pekee yake alafu akatoka kwa gorofa ameanguka. Joseph Kubende is a politician who has assisted a lot of politicians in Bungoma County and outside to get to leadership positions,” said Mr. Shakama.

“So we understand that he might be targeted by a few individuals, but we want to know the truth, and those people who were with him tunaomba uchunguzi ufanyike na wakuje watuelezee kama familia. We’re not going to bury Joseph kama serikali haijatuambia ukweli.”

Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa, who joined the family at their rural home in Bahai village, expressed reservations about the suicide claim, alleging instead that the deceased could have been killed.

“Kubende, who had stayed at his cousin’s place for one week, was scheduled to travel to the United States where he lived,” said the police report filed under the OB Number 88/23/03/2023.

After falling from the Lumumba Drive apartment on Thursday, Good Samaritans took the victim to Jesse Kay Hospital in Roysambu for emergency treatment.

He was, thereafter, referred to Radiant Group of Hospitals in Pangani for advanced treatment.

Kubende, however, succumbed to his injuries while at the hospital.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed Kubende was alone in the house during the incident.

His body was moved to Montezuma Monalisa Funeral Home, Jimmy Kimaru, the Kasarani Sub-County Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO), told The Standard.

Kubende celebrated his 42nd birthday on March 19. He took to Facebook to ask God to “protect and guide me through the turbulence of life”.

Prior to relocating to the United States, Kubende worked as teacher of English and Literature at the Kigali Institute of Education in Rwanda.

A gifted orator, musician and author, Kubende was known for his books such as Ancient Pot of Gold and In Search of God.

Back in Bungoma County, where he was credited for helping Wycliffe Wangamati win the August 8, 2017 governorship, Kubende was famous among the youth.
