The source said Tanzanian police could not confirm that the couple that were apprehended were Bester and Magudumana based on the travel documents that they were travelling with.

A parliamentary briefing on Tuesday regarding the escape of rapist and murderer Bester from Mangaung Correctional Centre couldn’t proceed because security company G4S, which operates the prison where the suspect escaped, declined to appear.

There was a warrant of arrest and it was executed and one suspect is still at large, I am told. And a third person, who transported the dead body to Mangaung, is also expected to be arrested soon.

“The South African police can’t confirm it is them based on the information that they are receiving from Tanzania. However, Tanzanian police are making contact with the South African police,” the source said.

“Tanzanian police were alerted of individuals fitting the description of the fugitives and they were then apprehended on Friday.”

Correctional services however confirmed two weeks ago that Bester did not in fact die in the cell fire but escaped.

Scrolla.Africa also obtained a warrant of arrest for Bester, dated 27 March showed charges of unlawful escape from a correctional facility.

The warrant was signed and sealed at a police station in Bloemfontein.

Now believed to be 32-year-old, Bester had an accomplice, who many believe to be his partner, Dr Nandipha Magudumana.

A warrant for her arrest was also signed at the same police station on 3 April.
