Rossi would win two more with Yamaha in 2008 and 2009 to take his premier class haul to seven, and ultimately finished his MotoGP career with the marque at the end of 2021.
The Italian served two stints with Yamaha, first from 2004 to 2009 and again from 2013 to the end of 2021 following two dismal seasons with Ducati in 2011 and 2012.
Of his 89 MotoGP race wins, Rossi claimed 56 of these with Yamaha and is the marque’s most successful rider in grand prix history.
Since retiring in 2021, Rossi has embarked on a car racing campaign in the GT World Challenge Europe with WRT and owns the VR46 squad that competes in MotoGP.
Now we’ll have to see if this collaboration can also extend to his team in the MotoGP, which has a contract with Ducati that will expire at the end of next year. They’ll then have the opportunity to switch over to Yamaha. But, to do this, the M1 will have to become competitive, as was repeated several times. As of now, it’s not.
In a statement, Valentino said: “This agreement between me and Yamaha certainly thrills me. We’ve worked together for many years in the past, so it seems natural to me. After my retirement from the MotoGP, I continued to train and ride. I always thought I’d keep racing, in one way or another. During my MotoGP career, I rode Yamaha bikes as part of my contract. But even after retiring, I continued to use motorcycles because I like them. I’m delighted that the contract has been signed, and Yamaha and I can work together on this new project.”
