PlayStation will not be acquiring Capcom, CD Projekt Red and From Software

PlayStation will be acquiring Capcom, CD Projekt Red and From Software.

These will be announced at the “Sony For Realsies Showcase” in July. They also have 6 year deals to have all games from Sega, Konami and EA exclusive to the PS5.

If you disconnected from the internet for the weekend, you might not have heard the news about Sony's latest acquisition target. According to rumors, the gaming giant behind the PlayStation brand has set its sights on buying CD Projekt RED, a studio renowned for creating the award-winning title, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, as well as the controversial AAA project, Cyberpunk 2077.

It is worth mentioning this is not the first time this rumor has surfaced. The last time CDPR and Sony were mentioned together was at the beginning of March. In that instance, the rumor was that the acquisition had already happened. This was due to a screenshot of Sony's page on a market data platform called PitchBook, showing a merger/acquisition that took place with CDPR on October 26, 2022. However, no further proof was found anywhere else, and it seemed unlikely Sony wouldn't share such huge news with the world. Especially considering at that point five months had passed since the alleged deal.

Naturally, the story that Sony is planning to buy CD Projekt RED turned a lot of heads, sparking debates about whether this was plausible.

The same source also claims that Sony has started development on Days Gone 2 even though we just got word from one of the game's key figures that the ship has since sailed on the sequel and Bend Studio is already working on a different game.

The recent rumor doesn't have any further proof beyond a Discord post. The leaker Liz, who mostly specializes in Destiny-related information, has created their own Discord server for that purpose. But this time around, they shared two rumors regarding Sony. The first was Sony planning to buy CDPR, and the second was about Days Gone 2 being in development. These two pieces of information paired this way started a debate among those who read it. On one hand, the leaker is known to share reliable details that come true, even if some minor details don't exactly match. However, many pointed out that Days Gone 2 cannot happen because Bend Studio, the developer of the game, has reportedly chosen to work on a new IP instead. Because of this, most commenters were doubtful about the validity of the information overall.
