It alleged that officers from POP Durban were driving along M35 road from Folweni towards Philani village on top of Ezombokwedeni river bridge on their way to report for night shift duties inside their marked SAPS Toyota Quatum.
It is alleged that whilst driving officers realized that 2 of their tyres had gone flat. Whilst the driver was inspecting the vehicle, he saw 2 males approaching towards their vehicle whilst shooting towards their direction with Automatic rifles. It is alleged that all officers inside the vehicle alighted the quantum and ran for cover inside the near-by bushes. The 2 men continued advancing towards the SAPS vehicle until they reached the vehicle, it is alleged that the suspect continued on shooting at The SAPS vehicle until they were satisfied, suspects then walked back towards the scene where a G4S truck was being robbed.
It is alleged that SAPS officers came out of their hiding when their were satisfied that it was safe to do so. None of the SAPS members managed to To use their firearms during the attack. When officers came out of hidiTheir vehicle, they noticed that a G4S vehicle was blown off by the attackers +-400m away from the scene where they were attacked. The robbers managed to get away with an undisclosed amount of money, it is Alleged that the robbers also shot and killed one female passersby who was Inside a white Toyota Corolla, the driver of the white Toyota Corolla, was also shot on the leg.
SAPS officers also realized that one of their members was shot on the right foot and was taken to Kingsway hospital,other officers did not sustain any gunshot wounds, and all their firearms were accounted for. The SAPS vehicle was badly damaged riddled with bullet holes all over.
